How to choose your Tom Ford

Short answer: pick the scent style first, try a decant if you are unsure, then buy the bottle. Tom Ford names rarely tell you what a scent smells like, so use the groups below and check the size and the word "Tester" in each title. Style words come from Tom Ford's own descriptions.

Start here, the best-known (dark, floral and warm; evenings, fall and winter): Black Orchid 50ml, 3.4 oz and 150ml (black orchids, spice and dark accords), or the Black Orchid 50 ml Set. Skip it if you want something light and fresh.

Leather and warm (cool nights, dates): Ombré Leather 50ml, 100ml and 150ml (woody leather) and Fucking Fabulous 50ml (leather). Skip these if you want a sweet or fruity scent.

Fresh and citrus (daytime, warm weather, office): Neroli Portofino 50ml and 30 ml (sparkling citrus amber), Costa Azzurra 3.4 oz and 1.7 oz (aromatic citrus), Grey Vetiver 100 ml (wood, citrus and nutmeg) and Mandarino di Amalfi Acqua (citrus). Skip these if you want a rich, heavy scent for cold nights.

Sweet, fruity and gourmand (nights out, cold weather): Lost Cherry 50ml (fruity amber) and Electric Cherry 10 ml (a travel size). Skip these if you want a dry or woody scent.

Woody and amber (evenings, fall and winter): Noir Extreme 100ml (amber woody) and Ébène Fumé 50 ml (woody amber). Skip these if you want a light, fresh scent for hot days.

Floral (spring, summer, dates, travel): Soleil Neige 30 ml (sun on snow: citrus, white florals, amber and musk), the Soleil Blanc Travel Exclusive Set, Velvet Orchid 3.4 oz, Metallique 3.4 oz and Noir for women 3.4 oz. Skip these if you prefer leather or smoky scents.

Oud (special occasions): Oud Fleur 3.4 oz (oud with a floral side). Skip it if you do not like deep, resinous scents.
